The origins of baccarat

The origins of the game are disputed with both Italy and France claiming to have first played it. The generally accepted chronology, however, is that an Italian, Felix Falguerein created the game in the late 14th century. The game then gained traction in France in the 15th century among soldiers of Charles VIII.

The game made its way to North America in the 19th century. However, most Americans much preferred the game’s distant cousin, blackjack. It took a trip to Cuba and a new name, Punta Banco, for the game to eventually gain traction in North America in the 1950s.

How to play online baccarat

The aim of online casino baccarat is for a player to predict if either the player’s or the bank’s two card hand total will be closest or equal to 9.

Calculating hand totals

Hand totals are calculated by adding the card value of each of the cards of a hand together.

Card values are as follows: Face cards and tens are calculated as zero, numbered cards are calculated at their face value and aces are calculated as 1.

Hand totals over 9

If a hand total is 10 or more, the left digit is dropped and the right digital becomes the hand total – in the case of 10, they hand total would be 0.
